From Proto-Indo-European *pa(l)-pal- (fluttering; butterfly), a reduplication of Proto-Indo-European *pal- (to touch, tap, pat). Cognate with Latin pāpiliō (butterfly), Lithuanian papelučkà (moth, owlling), Old Mazanderani پاپلی (pāp(e)lē, butterfly).
