Etymology

[edit]

Ultimately from Ancient Greek Σκοῦποι (Skoûpoi); compare Latin Scūpī, Albanian Shkup, Ottoman Turkish اوسكوب (Üsküb) and Serbo-Croatian Skȍplje.

The name may have been subjected to phono-semantic matching when the Slavs settled in the area, with the Proto-Slavic elements *sъ + *kopьje + *-ьje, as seen in cognates Serbo-Croatian Skȍplje, Bulgarian Скопие (Skopie), Old Church Slavonic Съкопиѥ (Sŭkopije).

This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
