Substantivized feminine of ψυχιατρικός (psychiatrikós) < ψυχ- (psych-, psych-) +‎ ιατρικός (iatrikós, medical). Learned borrowing from French psychiatrie, from psychiatre. See Ancient Greek ψυχή (psukhḗ, soul) + ἰατρεία (iatreía, healing), from ἰάομαι (iáomai, to heal).
