Inherited from Angkorian Old Khmer ឝូន្យ (śūnya) (first attested in 878-977), from Sanskrit शून्य (śūnya, zero). Cognate with Thai ศูนย์ (sǔun), Lao ສູນ (sūn). Doublet of សុញ្ញ (soññɔɔ).
