From Proto-Indo-European *peh₁- (to hurt) (compare Latin patior (to suffer), Sanskrit पीयति (pīyati, to blame), Gothic 𐍆𐌹𐌾𐌰𐌽 (fijan, to hate)) +‎ -μα (-ma).
