Etymology

Originated in colonial-era Shanghai, possibly from English society, in the sense that the “society girls” were looked down upon in the 1930s.

Alternatively, referring to someone who rings the bell recklessly―ringing the bell 13 times, when there should be at most 12 strikes (in the 12-hour clock system).
